Why You Can’t Clean Wool Rugs in Your Home: Understanding the Challenges

Wool rugs are prized for their durability, warmth, and luxurious feel underfoot. However, when it comes to cleaning them, many homeowners find themselves in a conundrum. While vacuuming regularly can help maintain their appearance, deep cleaning wool rugs at home can be challenging and even risky. Here are some thoughts to consider:

  1. Rug Dust is Embedded in Fibers: Mobile rug cleaners simply do not have the correct machinery to properly dust a rug. And…if you do not dust a rug properly, when you go to add water, you’ve created “Mud Soup” making extra mess to clean and now making the cleaning not as good. Portable cleaning simply cannot be used due to the equipment necessary and process to get all the dust out.
  2. Portable & Truck-Mounted Carpet Cleaning Machines Only Clean “Surfaces”-Not “Washing” the Rug: Rug construction is made up of a warp and a weft and Rugs need to be submerged, and agitated, only after dusted to properly “wash the rug”. Surface-cleaning machines are incapable of cleaning rugs properly, even if you flip the rug over as dirt hides in the fibers and in the warp and the weft. “To Submerge or Not To Submerge- That is the Question!”
  3. Portable & Truck-Mounted Cleaning Machines are either too Hot or not hot enough: For example, when we clean wool carpets, we turn “down” the temperature to 150 degrees from 200 degrees (our Truck Mounted units are pressurized and heat to 240 degrees and when it reaches the wand its 195-200 degrees. Its literally a fire-breathing dragon and heat is one of the 4 main processes of cleaning (C-H-A-T: Chemistry-Heat-Agitation-Dwell TIME). If you clean a rug over 165%, you most likely will deteriorate the fibers or at minimally cause fiber shrinkage- Do Not Do This! Call a professional who warranties this and has insurance- like we do!
    1. Also, most carpet cleaners are “Untrained” Entry level employees who “FORGET” to adjust the temperature DOWN on Wool fibers to 150. How do we know this? because our company specializes in fixing shrunken wool carpet that has pulled off tack strip due to shrinkage and safely re-stretching it back on to tack strip. 4. Complex Fiber Structure: Wool fibers have a unique structure that makes them naturally resistant to stains and soiling. However, this same structure also makes them more prone to damage from harsh cleaning methods. Wool fibers are delicate and can easily become distorted or felted if exposed to excessive moisture or agitation. Beware of bleaching out a wool rug with your cleaner who doesnt know how to clean. We know how to clean rugs and we are one of the ONLY RUG DYERS IN ALL OF LOS ANGELES, VENTURA, ORANGE, SANTA BARBARA, RIVERSIDE & SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES!
  5. Risk of Shrinkage: Wool is highly absorbent and can hold a significant amount of water. When exposed to moisture, wool fibers have a tendency to shrink, leading to distortion and puckering of the rug. Homeowners or professional attempting to clean wool rugs with water-based methods, such as steam cleaning or shampooing, may inadvertently cause irreversible damage due to shrinkage.
  6. pH Sensitivity: Wool is sensitive to changes in pH levels, particularly alkaline solutions. Many commercial carpet cleaners and detergents are formulated with alkaline ingredients, which can strip the natural oils from wool fibers and leave them brittle and prone to breakage. Additionally, residual alkaline residues left behind after cleaning can attract dirt and grime, making the rug appear dull and dingy over time.
  7. Color Bleeding and Fading: Wool rugs often feature vibrant colors and intricate patterns that can be easily damaged by improper cleaning methods. Using harsh cleaning agents on a wool rug can cause the dyes to bleed or fade, resulting in a loss of color intensity and clarity. Professional rug cleaners have the expertise and specialized equipment to safely clean wool rugs without compromising their color or design.
  8. USE PROPER DRYING or You will Get Mildew and Mold Growth: Wool rugs that are not properly dried after cleaning are at risk of developing mildew and mold growth. Wool fibers can retain moisture for extended periods, providing an ideal breeding ground for mold and mildew spores. We use dehumidifiers and specialized drying techniques to ensure that wool rugs are thoroughly dried and free of moisture, reducing the risk of mold and mildew growth. Also, we groom the rugs to prevent wrinkles, buckles or fringe damage.
  9. Damage to Rug Backing: Many wool rugs have a backing material that provides structure and stability. Excessive moisture or aggressive cleaning methods can cause the rug backing to deteriorate, leading to separation of the fibers and loss of integrity. Professional rug cleaners understand the delicate balance between thorough cleaning and preserving the structural integrity of wool rugs, ensuring that they remain in optimal condition for years to come.

In conclusion, while wool rugs are a luxurious addition to any home, they require specialized care and attention to maintain their beauty and longevity. Attempting to clean wool rugs in your home can lead to irreversible damage and compromise their appearance and integrity. Professional rug cleaners have the expertise, equipment, and techniques necessary to safely and effectively clean wool rugs, ensuring that they remain a cherished centerpiece in your home for generations to come.
